Paper Abstract
Between 2022 and 2026, decentralised compute networks moved from speculative concept to revenue-generating infrastructure. The category now carries circulating market capitalisation near US$10 billion and 2025 on-chain revenues of approximately US$72 million, with AI laboratories and developers paying for compute on these networks and a shift in narrative concerning the targetted desire to scale compute resources globall suggests that compute, specifically on-chain should be further investigated to assist policy makers, regulators and venture operators. We ask, in this short paper, whether decentralised compute networks could be considered commodity markets. We do not aim to settle the question. We propose a small vocabulary, sketch a framework, and walk it briefly through four named networks.
