Common Language and Shared Understanding - BGIN Terms

Hi in the ops working group we decided to workshop BGIN’s common language and shared understanding async in a thread on discourse.

BGIN’s mission is to create neutral forums for productive discussion, welcoming all stakeholders, documenting a common language to establish shared understanding, standardising the the most fundamental and critical aspects of blockchain technology.

I’ll get us started by writing a list of terms which encompass BGIN’s values we can share with the community to build common language and shared understanding - we can grow this thread from here I feel.

please add your own we can deliberate the concepts if needed  , here’s a start:

Neutral Forum:

A neutral forum is a setting or platform where participants from diverse backgrounds or with differing viewpoints can discuss issues or make decisions without any bias or influence from any particular group. The purpose is to ensure fairness and impartiality in the discussions and outcomes.

MultiStakeholders:

Multiple parties or groups are involved, each holding a stake or interest in a particular issue or project. This approach is typically used in contexts where decisions affect various sectors, including government, private sector, civil society, and academia, ensuring that all relevant perspectives are considered.

Establish Documentation and Common Language:

The creation of written records and the development of a set of terms and definitions that are agreed upon by all parties involved help ensure clarity, reduce misunderstandings, and facilitate effective communication among diverse groups with different backgrounds or expertise.

Best Practices and Standards Alignment:

This involves identifying, adopting, and aligning with established best practices and standards relevant to a particular field or activity. The goal is to improve efficiency, quality, and outcomes by adhering to recognised methods and criteria that have been proven effective.

Shared Understanding and In-depth Discussion:

Shared understanding is achieved when all participants in a discussion or project mutually recognise the objectives, methods, and issues. In-depth discussion refers to thorough and detailed conversations that explore topics comprehensively to resolve complexities and ensure all viewpoints are considered.

Standards and Best Practices:

Standards are formal guidelines or specifications established by consensus and approved by a recognized body to ensure that materials, products, processes, and services are fit for their purpose. Best practices are methods or techniques generally accepted as superior to alternatives because they produce results superior to those achieved by other means. Together, they guide industry and professional conduct to achieve maximum efficiency and quality.

Thank you Mitchell! How about this change?

BGIN’s mission is to create neutral forums for productive discussion, welcoming all stakeholders, documenting a common language to establish shared understanding, standardising the most fundamental and critical aspects of blockchain technology.

→ BGIN is a non-profit organization that aims to create neutral forums for in-depth discussions among all stakeholders, documenting a common language to establish shared understanding. It also strives to establish best practices and standards for blockchain governance, encompassing operational or regulatory standards as well as technological standards.

added several essences
・non-profit organization
・best practices and standards
・what kind of best practices/standards? - not limited to technical ones
・fundamental and critical aspects might be a bit abstract
・blockchain governance is a necessary phrase

A few questions/comments:

  • “non-profit organization” we used to call BGIN a think tank
  • standards are normally some years behind new technologies/products. If BGIN focuses only on standards, then large group of stakeholders may disengage
  • reference to IETF is not really accurate. As we all know, the Internet forums mostly focus on technical aspects while staying away from economic implications. Web3 is by definition works with economics. This is where governance plays a critical role.
  • I am not sure to what extent focus on standards will allow achieving sustainable business model for BGIN itself

I would suggest reviset

  • what IETF is doing (for RFC and I-D)
  • what IRTF is doing (for documents)
  • what OpenID Foundation is doing (for stanfards, documents and certification)

All of the above are working on both standards and emerging topics. Without standards and documents created by above organizations, we cannot enjoy the Internet and applciations.

Leon: I’m saying how the consensus mechanism of the IETF works well for the global communication ecosytem (the Internet). The origin of BGIN is coming from the FSB report in 2019.

https://www.fsb.org/2019/06/decentralised-financial-technologies-report-on-financial-stability-regulatory-and-governance-implications/

Anenx 3 of this report mentioned about internatioanl organizations to standardizing global technologies for communicaitons as examples.

BGIN is establised by 31 initial contributors to follow the G20 commuique which welcomed the above FSB report. (see clause 17 of the 2019 G20 communique)
https://www.mofa.go.jp/policy/economy/g20_summit/osaka19/en/documents/final_g20_osaka_leaders_declaration.html#:~:text=We%2C%20the%20Leaders%20of%20the,for%20the%20benefit%20of%20all.

The FSB report and G20 communique are the root of BGIN.

Please read carefully this report again. I would strongly recommend you to read the following report by JFSA as well. The report will provide some idea how a global technology may have a good governance mechanism to have social acceptance.

Everyone already understands the differnce between the global communication technology (the Intenet) and the global smart bookkeeping/accounting system which result smart economy (blockchain ecosystem). Everyone already understands that IETF won’t discuss economical aspects of Blockchian. If IETF will disucuss it, we don’t need to establish and operate BGIN.

Of course it mignt not be correct to cope and paset 100% of IETF mechanism. But, we can refer the most of them.

Standardization is an important process for social acceptance.

Blockchain Governance Initiative Network (BGIN) is a non-profit organization that creates neutral forums for in-depth discussions among all stakeholders, documenting a common language to establish shared understanding. It also fosters innovation, best practices, guidelines, and standards for blockchain governance in operational, regulatory, and technical spheres.

Our stakeholders include business operators, developers, regulators, academia, and users.
